I bought a ten year old Pietta 1860 44 that needed a lot of help but looked ok for $100. So getting a nicely done Uberti for $130 is a helluva deal. and.So here goes---Hawkens 45 and 50 are 15/16. Hawkens 54 and larger 1 inch. Seneca 36 and 45 are 13/16. Renegades are 1 inch. But here is the real difference between the Hawken and the Seneca, the Seneca is a completely scaled down version of the Hawken. While the patent breech is an old design, the hook-breech is not. Today the hook-breech is used mainly on halfstock rifles and shotguns so the barrels can be quickly removed. When you have a fullstock rifle there will be very few times when you want to remove the barrel. The photos below show one of the famous mahogany stocked rifles by Haines. The rifle I am using for inspiration is #81 shown in RCA vol 1. It is maple stocked but the patch box and carving are very similar to the mahogany stocked rifles. Filter through a coffee filter, etc, and use this to stain maple.Turn it with an electric drill, and run the emery up and down the barrel a couple of hundred times; that should remove a lot of the pits unless they are very deep. Change the emery often to keep it sharp. Finish up with very fine emery to polish. This has done wonders for a couple of old shotguns I have messed with.What it looks like, does matter. Just look at the ballistics data a .54 loaded with 120 grains 3f will get about 1800 fps in a 35" barrel or so. At 100 yards will slow to 1050 or so. An 80 grain charge will do about 1500 fps and will slow to a little more then 900. Today I have the borders all done and ready to do my panels and more. After five hours though, it was time to quit for the day. Decorating a Powder Horn is really an individual's own choice. With conicals, You can go a bit slower than 1:48 and still stabilize some longer bullets. But, either paper patched bullets in shallow grooves must be used, nor a good base wad to seal the gases behind the bullet needs to be used so that you can get the velocity needed to stabilize these longer bullets in flight.
